Knopf in 1992 and in the United Kingdom by Picador later the same year. This paperback was published by Picador in association with Esquire as a promotion for the magazine. The wraparound paper band reads, "'One of the greatest novels of all time' FREE with Esquire."

All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing, and Cities of the Plain comprise the Border Trilogy, though the novels were written and published over a span of six years. Detailing the rough-riding lifestyle of its cowboy protagonists living near the United States-Mexico border, the trilogy was McCarthy's commercial breakthrough and an example of the author at his best. All the Pretty Horses won the National Book Award in 1992 and the series has been the basis for multiple film adaptations.
