All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing, and Cities of the Plain comprise the Border Trilogy, though the novels were written and published over a span of six years. Detailing the rough-riding lifestyle of its cowboy protagonists living near the United States-Mexico border, the trilogy is McCarthy at his best: All the Pretty Horses won the National Book Award in 1992 and the series has been the basis for multiple film adaptations.
