BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE (Inscribed First Edition with TLS)

New York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1970. First edition. Inscribed by the author: "For Tom Carney, fellow librarian - with best wishes - Dee Brown" with a small drawing of a teepee. Also laid in is a typed letter from the author to Carney (1977) in which he comments on the scarcity of this particular copy of the first edition; one with trimmed page edges, one of a thousand copies originally bound in soft covers and then later put into hard covers to keep up with demand. Book in Near Fine condition due to the page block pulling a bit at the top of the spine in like dust jacket with a touch of fading and wrinkling near the spine ends. Brown's surprise bestseller retells the story of the US westward migration, showing the tragedy of the Native American's plight as the west was won. On the whole a lovely copy, clean and unread with a fantastic inscription by Brown who was head librarian at the University of Illinois to Carney, head librarian at Cedar Rapids Public Library and library science faculty at the University of Iowa. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. (Item #827)
