Lonesome Dove was a major bestseller and the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1986. The novel, which has become a modern classic of Western literature, follows the Midwest cattle drive of a number of ex-Texas Rangers. McMurtry originally wrote the story as a movie script, but when a number of the principals backed out, he decided to write it as novel instead. The work became so well received that it would spawn a series of books and was eventually adapted into an Emmy Award-winning television series in 1989 starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. McMurtry's days of screenwriting were not over – he would go on to win an Academy Award for his adaptation of Brokeback Mountain.
