In the summer of 1951, twenty-two-year-old Jacqueline Bouvier and her younger sister, eighteen-year-old Lee, took a grand tour of Europe. As they traveled through London, Paris, Venice, Rome, and Florence, the sisters documented their adventures in drawings, photographs, poetry, and personal accounts. Upon their return to the United States at the end of the summer, they gifted the travel diary to their mother as a memento. The diary was then forgotten for nearly two decades, until Lee began compiling reminiscences of her youth for a book she was writing at the time. Searching through her family's papers uncovered the sisters' travel diary, which is faithfully reproduced here. The result is a charming, enthusiastic record of Jacqueline and Lee's adventure of a lifetime, long before the fame and tragedy that would mark their later lives.

In her preface, Lee writes, "We did this book in a state of joy and laughter, which was our mood throughout the trip. We split the fun: Jackie did the drawings, the poetry and the parts on Rome and Spain. I described most of our adventures. Then, happily presented to our mother with all our thanks more than two decades ago, the journal of 'One Special Summer' was forgotten...And so here it is, just as we did it in 1951, with not a word or a pen stroke changed."
