Mr. Citizen is Harry S. Truman's memoir of his post-presidential life. Truman served two presidential terms, beginning with his succession from the vice presidency after Franklin Delano Roosevelt's death in 1945 and concluding in 1953. Truman wrote the memoir seven years after he left office – the title refers to the unique situation of transitioning from the heights of presidential power to the position of ordinary citizen. "In those [seven] years" of ordinary citizenship, Truman writes, "I have had the opportunity to record something of what happened to one former President after his return to private life." In Mr. Citizen, Truman reflects on his life as president, his post-presidential political involvement (including his support of Adlai Stevenson's bid for the presidency), and on the role of the president in American life, both during and after their terms in the White House.
