Eisenhower collected his presidential memoirs in two volumes, Mandate for Change, 1953-1956 and Waging Peace, 1956-1961. This second volume of the set "details major developments from the national elections of 1956 until just after Inauguration Day 1961, or the four years of [Eisenhower's] second term." Major political events covered in the work include the Suez Canal crisis, the first decades of the Cold War, the 1954 Brown v. Board decision and the Civil Rights movement, and the Soviet launch of Sputnik. In his preface, Eisenhower writes, "if anything here—the story of a lesson learned, a principle proved, or an old truth emphasized—should be found of value by those who in years to come will bear responsibilities in the federal government, all of us who served this nation in my administration will be deeply rewarded."
