London: Duckworth & Co, 1903. First edition in English. Octavo. Original publisher's black cloth, lettered in gilt to spine and red to upper cover, 4 pp. of publisher's ads at rear. A little wear to upper cover affecting 'M' of Monk, extremities a little rubbed and frayed, a little foxing internally but generally clean. A Very Good copy.

Chekhov's exceedingly rare first appearance in English, translated by R. E. C. Long who writes in his preface "the writer of the stories and sketches here translated, although hardly known in this country, and but little better known on the western continent of Europe, has during the last fifteen years been regarded as the most talented of the younger generation of Russian writers". The volume contains twelve stories, including Ward No. 6, On The Way and Two Tragedies. We have been unable to trace any copy at auction.
