Published four years after Tolkien's death, The Silmarillion is a sweeping prequel to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Set in the Elder Days, or the First Age of the World, the book builds out the universe and mythology of Middle Earth and its surrounding geographies. The Silmarillion comprises multiple self-contained interrelated parts, the most famous of which details the Elves' battle with Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, over the Silmarils (three jewels created by Fëanor from the light of the Two Trees of Valinor).
