Death of a Salesman is one of the enduring classics of the American stage. The play, which director Elia Kazan saw to 742 performances during its initial run, became the first to win a Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the New York Drama Circle Critics’ Award. The starring role of Willie Loman, the quintessential American tragic hero, has been played by such luminaries as George C. Scott, Brian Dennehy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. For his role as Loman in the 1951 film adaptation, Fredric March was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
