A Newbery Honor Book and a classic of children's literature, Millions of Cats is the oldest American picture book still in print. Wanda Gág (1893 - 1946) was a pioneering illustrator who, in Millions of Cats, "used both pages to move the story forward, putting them together with art that sweeps the entire page spread" (Grolier, Children's 100). The folk-art inspired illustrations, drawing on Gág's Bohemian background, were admired by contemporaries like Maurice Sendak and Rockwell Kent. Perhaps more importantly, the rhythmic phrase repeated throughout the book became a beloved chant of children everywhere: "Cats here, cats there, cats and kittens everywhere. Hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats..."

Grolier, Children's 100, 72.
