The Trumpet of the Swan (Presentation copy)

New York: Harper and Row, 1970. First edition. Presentation copy: "Ann | with love (and in sorrow) | Andy White | N. Brooklin Aug. 1970." The recipient, Ann Day, was friend and neighbor to E. B. White in Maine. White signed his name "Andy," a nickname from his days at Cornell, used among close friends and family. Book Near Fine with cloth a bit mottled and a small spot on the fore-edge of the page block that looks like a drop of water hit. Dust jacket about Fine with a few crinkles at the extremities and a gentle rub along the back flap fold. With all points for a true first: the original $4.50 price, "0670" code on the front flap, publisher clipped on the lower corner, no "Honor Book" award sticker, and with the full numberline on the final page. White's heartwarming story of Louis, a Trumpeter Swan, his relationship with a young boy, Sam Beaver, and his efforts to find his voice and his place in the world. A book that is rarely found signed or inscribed. Near Fine in about Fine dust jacket. (Item #977)
