London: [Privately Printed by C. Roworth and Sons], 1833. First edition thus. Privately printed edition, similar to the Edward Moxon edition of 1833. Presentation copy from the translator, Abraham Hayward: "--- --- The book dealer ---- presented with the highest respect by the Translator A. H." Additionally written by Hayward "(not published)" on the title page and hand-corrected on pgs. lviii, 16, 192, 209, and 246. In a lovely binding by Hayday with fived raised bands and intricate gilt detailing. Octavo (pages 217 x 133 mm) collating: [2 title], [v]-lxxxvii, [1 blank], 279, [1 corrigenda]; complete, although with a slightly different pagination than the Moxon edition. First Hayward translation of Faust (part one only) and the first to attempt a full translation, rather than using prose explanations to link the translated passages. Hayward's translation was the most accurate and the most complete of its day and included a substantial preface and notes on the text. A scarce edition with just six other copies located on OCLC and no records of this edition at auction. (Item #891)
