Written thirty years after Herbert Hoover left office, The Ordeal of Woodrow Wilson reflects on Wilson's role during World War I based on both documentary evidence of the period and Herbert Hoover's own recollections of the President. During the war, Hoover served as the head of the United States Food Administration, managing the American food supply and directing aid to its allies abroad. Wilson worked closely with Hoover and developed both an understanding of Wilson's response to hardship and a respect for the President as a leader. Hoover writes, "My association with him was such that I necessarily formed convictions as to his philosophy of life, his character and his abilities which have deepened during these four decades. My appraisal of him is based solely on my own experiences with him and my knowledge of the forces with which he had to deal...The story of this period is...a tragedy to the world against which [Wilson] fought – and it becomes the tragedy of Woodrow Wilson" (p. vii) Fine (Item #8147)
