Sweet Thursday

New York: The Viking Press, 1954. First edition. A Nearly Fine copy in like dust jacket. Previous owner's name on the front end paper, otherwise sharp and unread. Jacket with just a bit of toning to the spine.

A novel intended as a sequel to Cannery Row focusing on post-WWII California and incorporating several of the characters from the earlier work. Steinbeck not only offers an entertaining return to the infamous neighborhood in Monterey, but uses his narrative to question the writing process and “representational ability of language” itself (Demott). With an increased interest in theater, Steinbeck crafted a text that could more easily be adapted into a Broadway performance, and many of the storylines found their way into the cinematic adaptation of Cannery Row (1982).
Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. (Item #5785)
