The Tempest

San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1951. First Thus. Limited edition of 160 copies. Quarter linen over patterned boards with gilt and morocco to spine. Measuring 380 x 270mm and beautifully illustrated throughout. An unused proof inserted loosely at front. A Near Fine example, with a hint of shelfwear to boards and evidence of a removed bookseller's ticket to the rear pastedown. Pleasing overall.

Established by brothers Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, the Grabhorn Press was among the finest U.S. printers from the 1920s-1960s and had a reputation for taking an adventurous approach to printing and illustrating important pieces of literature. The present is the press' first reinterpretation of a Shakespeare work -- notably, among the playwright's final plays -- and initiated a series featuring the visual work of Mary Grabhorn.
