The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1907. First U.S. trade edition. Near Fine book with a bit of rubbing to corners and scattered foxing to preliminary and terminal leaves. In a VG+ jacket with loss to extremities and to small portion of the rear panel; some chipping and closed tears, and a bit of rubbing. A charming example of Rackham's work, featuring eight illustrations.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells the tale of Ichabod Crane, a bumbling schoolteacher who unwittingly finds himself in competition with dashing Brom Bones for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel. Both tales feature central characters who must navigate new communities as outsiders. Here, Rackham deploys his customary blend of Pre-Raphaelite beauty with the lingering sense of foreboding and darkness. Near Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. (Item #5216)
