Steinbeck's first book published by Viking and in the first jacket designed by Elmer Hader, who would do art for the jackets for The Grapes of Wrath and The Winter of Our Discontent. Set in Steinbeck's home region of Salinas Valley, California, these twelve short stories were composed across an extended period of time. They capture the landscape and Steinbeck's relationship to it beautifully; and for this reason, the book is a wonderful introduction to Steinbeck's authorial style. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.
