Published in 1938, The Fifth Column and the First 49 Stories is an anthology of some of Hemingway’s most classic works. It includes The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, The Killers and A Clean, Well Lighted Place (which James Joyce called “one of the best short stories ever written.”) The anthology also includes The Fifth Column, which is Hemingway’s only known play set during the Spanish Civil War.
