Upper Mall, Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 14 July 1897. First edition. Original publisher's linen-backed blue boards. One of 350 copies printed on paper, printed in black and red with Chaucer type. 41 pages, measuring 140 x 250mm. Small stain to front board and corners a touch bumped, but pleasing in all. Faint offsetting to front pastedown; else internally fresh and unmarked. A pleasing copy.
Syr Ysambrace is part of a series of medieval metrical romances that the Kelmscott Press produced in the 1890s. The series is based upon manuscripts located in the libraries of Lincoln Cathedral and Cambridge University, edited by James O. Halliwell. Morris created the decorative initials and his partner Sir Edward Burne-Jones created the woodcut illustrations. A stirring visual artifact of the Kelmscott Press and an homage to early English verse. (Item #3977)
