First edition of the third book (preceded by The Dolly Dialogues and The Zankiwank and the Bletherwitch) entirely illustrated by Rackham, and very scarce in collectible condition. Publisher's red cloth, front cover and spine lettered in gilt, original black coated end-papers. inner hinges very slightly cracked but absolutely sound, minimal fading to spine, otherwise an unusually bright and fresh copy. Octavo. (7 9/16 x 5 inches; 192 x 127 mm). x, 242, [2, adv.] pp. Twelve black and white plates, including frontispiece.

"These character notes were first published in the Cornhill Magazine during 1893, 1894, and 1895. Of these sketches, originally intended to be written in collaboration, a minority only are from the pen of H.S. Merriman." A lovely illustrated work by S.G. Tallentyre ( the pseudonym of historian Evelyn Beatrice Hall), an English writer best known for her biography entitled The Life of Voltaire, first published in 1903. She also wrote The Friends of Voltaire, which she completed in 1906. Together with Henry Seton Merriman she also wrote From Wisdom Court in 1896.
