Acclaimed by The Observer that year as being "amongst the cleverest and most interesting of recent novels." Hugh Stowell Scott (1862-1903), the author, was a prominent English novelist who used the pseudonym Henry Seton Merriman. The Grey Lady was first published in 1895 without illustrations.
