The Luck of Roaring Camp

Boston: Fields, Osgood & Co, 1870. First edition. First issue without the story Brown of Calaveras. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine. Light rubbing to extremities and rear board. Front hinge starting and rear tender but both holding well. Brown coated endpapers. Internally a neat and pleasing copy. Housed in a custom case with chemise.

A classic short story collection of California literature, The Luck of Roaring Camp has been compared to Twain's Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Harte's characters are pioneers and prospectors -- but his stories also consider the lives of their families and the children born into the West. Charming and memorable, copies in the original unrepaired cloth are becoming increasingly scarce.
