New York: Signet Books, 1960. First edition thus. Signed by the author for Kurt Enoch, the publisher of Signet Books. First printing of the paperback edition in Fine condition.
O’Connor’s second novel, published four years before her death. “The Violent Bear It Away” follows the struggle of a young boy with fate and is steeped in much of the Southern Gothic iconography that O’Connor is famous for. O’Connor was recognized posthumously for her work, when her “Complete Stories” won a National Book Award, in 1972. “The novel is superior in conception and execution to anything Miss O’Connor has previously published.” (Contemporary New York Times Review)
Provenance: From the library of Kurt Enoch, who founded the New American Library and subsequently its Signet and Penguin imprints, and who in the late 1940s invented the mass market paperback, bringing the work of many great authors to a vast and entirely new readership. Fine (Item #2037)
