[NOVUM ORGANUM] INSTAURATIO MAGNA

[NOVUM ORGANUM] INSTAURATIO MAGNA

[London] Londini: Apud Joannem Billium, 1620. First edition. Second issue. Folio volume rebound by Riviere and Son in full morocco with five raised bands and delicate ornamental gilt. [10], 172, 181-360; 36, [37-38] p. Signatures: [-]; [par.]4; A-C6; D-Ss4; Tt6; a-e4. This copy lacking the first blank and the blank at c4. Second issue with e3 cancelled and previously blank e4 printed with errata and colophon, omitting Norton's name. With the exception of aforementioned blanks, copy collates complete. Not one of the large paper copies, page size is approximately 11" by 7" with jug watermark. A truly extraordinary copy with fresh, clean pages. This copy also has a fore-edge painting signed and dated 1953 by V. Dutter [Miss Vera Dutter], one of America's most famous fore-edge painters. Originally commissioned by Bess Connelly. Never a common book, this copy is quite extraordinary in how beautifully the pages have been preserved and because of the fore-edge painting. Novum Organum forms the core of Bacon's Instauratio, where Bacon proposes a new inductive method of reasoning, critical to the development of the scientific method and to the general advancement of human thought. Text in Latin. Additional photos available upon request. STC 1162. Pforzheimer App. 1. PMM 119. (Item #198)
